Advanced Level Choices
“Do what you love, and you will love what you do.”
As our students progress to the Advanced Level, they are encouraged to identify their strengths and interests and to carefully select a suitable combination of subjects and the examination board best aligned with their aspirations. To support this process, all students have access to Unifrog, an international career guidance platform. Unifrog offers five psychometric assessments that help students gain deeper insight into their personality, interests, aptitudes, and skill sets, enabling informed academic and career decisions.
In addition, an in-house Career Guidance Department is available to support both students and parents. Through individual meetings, the department provides further guidance when selecting Advanced Level subjects and planning future pathways.
At Ladies’ College, students may choose from three Advanced Level examination boards:
1. Local GCE Advanced Level Examination
Conducted by the Department of Examinations, Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka
- Students are required to select three subjects. In addition, General English and the Common General Test are mandatory examinations for which students are prepared in this section.
- This qualification serves as the primary entrance requirement for Sri Lankan state universities. Ladies’ College takes pride in the many students who have gained admission to leading institutions such as the University of Colombo, University of Kelaniya, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya, and the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in recent years.
- Students following this stream are also eligible for admission to private universities in Sri Lanka and overseas. We are proud of our students who have gained entry to prestigious institutions such as the University of Cambridge, Harvard University, the University of Sydney, and many other universities worldwide.
2. British GCE Advanced Level Examination
Conducted by Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Examination Boards
- Students may select up to four subjects, with a minimum of three subjects from the same examination board being mandatory.
- Examinations are conducted annually and include the British Advanced Subsidiary (AS) and British Advanced Level (A Level) examinations:
- British Advanced Subsidiary (AS): Conducted during Grade 13. Students may sit the examination in the May/June session, with the option to re-sit or complete additional papers in October or January of the following year, if required.
- British Advanced Level (A Level): Students complete their schooling with this examination in their final year (Grade 14). The examination is conducted in the May/June session.
