The New Sports Complex
The school’s backgarden has been fully used for field sports and athletics. We face the problem with badminton which is at present being played in the school hall where the roof is not high enough for the game. Squash has also become a popular sport in Sri Lanka and the school has decided to accommodate both these sports in a new sports complex along with a gym and wash rooms which would prove convenient for the girls who begin their sports practice daily at 6 am before school commences.
The new Sports Complex is designed for a building on the only available free land space which lies between the tennis courts and the Department of Vocational Studies. This land has never been used to date as it is water-logged with very poor soil structure. The school has decided to utilize this area by building a strong foundation the cost of which being less than purchasing land in the neighborhood for the project.
The 2010 LC walk was organized to fund this project and the funds collected should go a long way to building the foundation. Funds are however required for the building. Donations to complete the project would be very welcome. All donations should be made to the school in favor of “The Ladies’ College Building and Equipment fund” which will be tax exempted and should be accompanied by a letter or donation form which can be downloaded
Upgrading of Facilities
We continue to upgrade facilities in the areas of both academics and sports and seek regular support from Old Girls and parents for this purpose.
Spending funds to upgrade sports facilities in the school is as important as the building of class rooms in the present context of holistic education. Such upgrading on a regular basis has become very expensive but a necessary one if we are to maintain high standards in the sports arena.
Ladies’ College has made great strides in the field of sport especially athletics, rowing, and water polo. We now have a strong presence in the arena of inter school and national sports. Success covers a wide variety of sports practised today. This has been possible with the provision of facilities, good coaching and implementation of good sports discipline and management, However employment of coaches and provision of requisite standards of sports have become very expensive and cannot be covered by school fees.
We currently require funds for upgrading our tennis courts, and athletics tracks, and for boats and oars. We have recently upgraded the facilities for table tennis.
Upgrading IT facilities have also proved an expensive exercise as we need to invest in new generations of computers, technology and facilities for teaching.
We appeal to Old Girls and students to help us with this project both financially and with material pertaining to the school such as photographs, articles, newspaper clippings, old badges and trophies which they may possess or have received as part of their family heirlooms.
Donations to the above projects are welcome – Select donation forms and download General Donation form.
